Parent’s voices are heard
Parents with deaf children voiced their feelings and made a real difference during the 2010 election campaign. They contacted their local politicians and, as a result, 223 MPs – over a third of those in Parliament – have pledged to take action. The pledge called on candidates, if elected, to take action to: close the gap in educational attainment between deaf children and other children; improve public services so deaf children and their families get the support they need from the start; help deaf children in their constituency get the same opportunities as other children.

Ataxia awareness
Ataxia Awareness Day is on 25 September and aims to raise the public’s understanding of ataxia. Research commissioned by Ataxia UK shows that just 7% of people know what ataxia is, even though over 10,000 in the UK have the condition. September is a key fundraising time for Ataxia UK with many sponsored events such as the Wheely Wobbly Walk.

Banish bullying
This year’s Anti Bullying Week, supported by NCB, takes place from 15-19 November and aims to send a positive message that it is neither acceptable nor inevitable in schools and communities. This year’s theme is Taking Action Together, tackling issues such as the child who watches while bullying is happening, the adult who turns a blind eye, the parent who doesn't know how to help, and the school and community that don't take action to tackle bullying.
