Max is a happy, cheeky five-year-old, with an adventurous spirit and loves his favourite teddy – Mr Sloth. Born after mum Lizzie had experienced a normal pregnancy, it was a shock when he arrived and doctors noticed something wasn’t quite right.
Following resuscitation at birth, and noticeably low muscle tone, Max spent the first month of his life in intensive care, undergoing multiple tests. At four months old, he was diagnosed with an incredibly rare genetic condition called KAT6B syndrome, affecting fewer than 200 people in the world.
The condition affects nearly every aspect of Max’s health. He has limited mobility, has a heart condition, kidney problems and other complications common to KAT6B syndrome. Doctors and his family are uncertain about what the future holds.
“Having a child with complex needs, it’s hard to find activities and places to take them. I will admit I was hesitant about Acorns at first. But I was very wrong. Acorns is just amazing. It’s one of the only places we can come and receive an exceptional level of support.” Lizzie
A relaxing environment
Throughout Max’s journey, Acorns has been a lifeline, offering both comfort and support to the family at every stage. They appreciate being in an environment where they don’t feel different, where they can just relax and enjoy whatever activities are going on.
Without Acorns, many children like Max and their families would be facing unimaginable challenges completely alone.
The demand for care at Acorns Children’s Hospice has doubled in the past year. More families than ever before are turning to Acorns for the care they simply cannot get anywhere else. Your support means Acorns can continue to be there for seriously ill children and their families when they need them most.
