Deaf Awareness Week

To celebrate Deaf Awareness Week (5-11 May) this year, the National Deaf Children’s Society has been asking deaf people from all walks of life, ‘what would you tell your younger self about growing up deaf’?

The theme for Deaf Awareness Week 2025 in the UK is ‘Beyond Silence’ and will highlight the importance of looking beyond common misconceptions about deafness and recognising the experiences, identities, and contributions of Deaf individuals in society.

Strength in community

As part of this year’s campaign, the National Deaf Children’s Society asked deaf people to share powerful video messages of encouragement, pride and wisdom, with their younger selves. The messages, such as the one below, offer an insight into the challenges they’ve faced and the strength they’ve found in their identity and community.

“You don’t have to worry about the future. You will learn so much as you go and achieve what you want to achieve. I know you can do it! If you have dreams … go for it! I know you might face barriers, but with support out there, you can overcome these. Don’t be frightened.” – Arran

There are over 50,000 deaf children in the UK, and three babies are born deaf every day. Most deaf children are born to hearing parents, making an understanding of deafness even more important.

The National Deaf Children’s Society is helping to make everyday life more deaf-friendly for children and young people year-round.  Thank you for helping them to achieve this.
