When families need to entrust their child’s complex care to someone else, so they can take a much-needed break from providing non-stop care, Acorns Children’s Hospice is there for them.

Now a bubbly six-year-old, at just a few weeks old, Oliver was diagnosed with stage five chronic kidney disease, a life-threatening condition that meant his kidneys were close to failure and he would need a transplant. He was put on dialysis at five months old. The family were back and forth to the hospital for treatment, whilst trying to keep on top of Olivers medications and care.

His parents, John and Catherine cared for him 24-hours-a-day, until they found out about Acorns.

“There aren’t many people who can look after Oliver. It was hard for us to step back and let somebody take the reins. But we knew the nurses at Acorns were fully trained professionals that could care for him and give us the break we really needed.” Catherine, Oliver’s Mum.

Care when they needed it most

Two years ago, at four years old, Oliver received a lifesaving kidney transplant from his Dad, and as his health continues to stabilise, he’ll no longer need Acorns. But his family remain forever grateful for the care and support they received at such a critical time, describing Acorns as ‘an absolute a godsend’ and ‘an absolutely brilliant place’.

With your support, Acorns can continue to be there for families like Oliver’s, allowing them to be a family and to keep smiling, knowing their child is in good hands.
